Don Dailey is a 25 year veteran of radio news in Alabama. 19 of those years have been spent as morning news anchor and reporter at WZZK, making Don the ranking member of the station's air staff. Don has brought WZZK listeners such momentous news events as the 9/11 tragedy, the killer West Jefferson tornado of 1998, the '98 Birmingham abortion clinic bombing, the blizzard of '93, the '91 Ensley commuter plane crash, and the '91 Talladega prison riot.
Don was recognized with the RTNDA's 2009 regional "Edward R. Murrow" award for "Best Newscast." He was also presented with the Alabama Broadcasters Association's 2009 "Abby" award for "Best Radio News Reporter."
This year's "Murrow" award for "Best Newscast" became one of 5 Don has won over the years, including the national "Murrow" in 1999. He has also been recognized with 3 regional "Murrows" for "Overall Excellence." And Don is a 5-time recipient of the "Murrow" award for "Best Spot News," including the national prize in 1999.
His '09 "Abby" award became Don's 5th overall. He won for "Best Radio News Reporter" in 2008 and 2007. Don also won the "Abbys" for "Best Newscast" in '08 and '07.
The Alabama Associated Press has honored Don with a dozen previous awards for "Most Outstanding News Operation" in the state and 15 past "Best Newscast" awards. He is also a 6-time recipient of the AP's "Best News Anchor" award and 5-time winner of the "Best News Reporter" award. The AP has also recognized Don with 7 previous awards for "Best Spot News," 7 for "Extraordinary Coverage," 2 for "Best Public Affairs," and 1 award each for "Best Investigative Reporting," "Best Specialized Reporter," "Best General Sports," and "News Cooperation." Prior to his tenure at WZZK, Don also won a number of AP awards in small market radio.
Don was also the inaugural recipient of the National Association of Broadcasters "Service to America" award for "Radio Friend in Need." He has been honored with the Society of Professional Journalists "Green Eyeshade" award for "Deadline Reporting." Don is a 4-time winner of Troy University's "Excellence in Alabama Journalism" award, and was named his Alma Mater's inaugural "Broadcast Alumnus of the Year." Baptist Health System has recognized Don with its "Excellence in Health Reporting" award.
Don enjoys attending Southside Baptist Church in Birmingham, where he is a member of the sanctuary choir. He has served as a member of Troy University's Journalism Alumni Association and the UAB School of Communications advisory board. Don is a volunteer spokesperson for the Alabama Eye Bank and serves as a "Lifetime Judge" for "Do Dah Day," the annual pet parade and fundraiser. His keen interest in pets comes from his two dogs, Lucy and Jack.
In his spare time, Don enjoys cooking on the grill, collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia, listening to 70's music and taking trips to the beach and to Linden, AL to visit his family.
