In each of the past two seasons, MLB has held its Field of Dreams game at the Iowa cornfields made famous by the baseball movie classic Field of Dreams. The league is taking a year off from the event this season as the site undergoes construction, but plans for 2024’s version are reportedly close to being set—this time, with a new venue.
The 2024 Field of Dreams game will reportedly feature the Cardinals and Giants, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, and will take place at the historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham.
Rickwood Field opened in 1910 and is the oldest professional ballpark in the country. It also holds a special place in Giants history: It was the home to the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues, which is the club where Willie Mays made his professional debut in 1948. Rickwood Field is the only home big-league ballpark where Mays played that still stands.
Like the site of the past two Field of Dreams games, Rickwood Field also has ties to baseball movie lore: scenes from films such as 42 (2013), Cobb (1994) and Soul of the Game (1996) were shot there.
