Alabama groups rally to help with Hurricane Helene rescue and aid efforts
The powerful Category 4 storm hit Florida last Thursday with 140 mph winds. It then moved through nearby states, causing heavy rains and severe flooding. Social media showed shocking images of floodwaters carrying vehicles and buildings.
As of Tuesday morning, many people in the Southeast still have no power, and many still can’t reach their loved ones.
How can you lend a hand?
This weekend, Alabama’s Emergency Management Agency shared FEMA’s advice on ways to help:
Reach Out: If you have family or friends in affected areas, check social media for updates. Visit the Red Cross Safe and Well or Contact Loved Ones | Disaster Aid | Red Cross sites.
Text Instead of Call: Texting keeps phone lines open for emergencies.
Best Way to Help: Money donations are most useful after a disaster. Visit Volunteer and Donate | FEMA.gov.
DONATE BLOOD
Also, National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) members and partners are helping affected communities. They’ll keep helping as long as needed. Only cash donations are requested. Don’t send goods or try to help on your own without coordination.
