If you thought rodeo was just about dusty boots and cowboy hats, think again! Cody Johnson just wrapped up his inaugural COJO Open Roping Championships in Belton, Texas, and let’s just say it was more than just a great time— it was a bona fide money-making machine for charity! Over a five-day event, top team ropers brought their A-game. But what really made waves was the gala finale where attendees raised an astonishing $719,000 for the Different Day Foundation and Texas FFA. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is!

Johnson, who’s been roping his way through life since 2020, shared his heart about the sport, calling it his escape from the hustle and bustle of fame. He wants roping not just to be about cashing in with prize money but creating lasting impacts on the community. After the event, he didn’t shy away from expressing his joy over social media, proclaiming it was one of the coolest weeks ever. I mean, how many people get to say they had a blast while also helping out local charities?

With promises to make the COJO Open the biggest roping event in the nation, it seems that Johnson is just getting started. He’s got visions of elevating this roping event into a big ol’ tradition that pays homage to the cowboy spirit while doing some serious good. If this first year is any indication, they hit a home run, and we can’t wait to see how big it grows next time. Here’s hoping they have enough room for all that generosity—and a few more heart-stopping roping skills!

You’ve got to hand it to Cody Johnson: he’s mixing rodeo with altruism like a pro. And honestly, who knew team roping could bring people together for such a cause? Now, if only we could rope in those pesky Monday mornings!
