Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond announced his retirement on Thursday morning.

Thurmond shared the news during a press conference called by Mayor Randall Woodfin.

“After much consideration, I’ve decided this is the right move. The timing feels appropriate. Birmingham is experiencing many positive developments, and I’m confident the police department will be in capable hands moving forward,” Thurmond stated.

He mentioned his retirement would take effect on Friday, November 29.

Mayor Woodfin expressed gratitude for Thurmond’s service.

“I want to start by thanking Chief Thurmond for his years of dedication and commitment to our city and the officers he’s led,” Woodfin said. “It’s worth noting that under Chief Thurmond’s leadership, we’ve seen a decrease in overall violent crime in Birmingham,” he added.

Recently, Thurmond faced criticism over public safety issues in the city. A petition circulated among Birmingham residents accused Thurmond of ineffective leadership, particularly in addressing rising homicide rates.

State Representative Juandalynn Givan called for Thurmond’s resignation shortly after the petition began.

However, law enforcement officials from other Alabama departments, including police chiefs from Oxford and Calera, have spoken out in support of Thurmond.

The Birmingham police union was set to hold a no-confidence vote against Thurmond in July. However, they postponed it, waiting for new anti-crime legislation for the city.

Thurmond took over as police chief in 2022. He first served as interim chief after Patrick Smith, the previous chief, stepped down.

Woodfin named Deputy Chief Michael Pickett as the temporary police chief. Pickett has 20 years of law enforcement experience.

Woodfin highlighted Pickett’s role in leading Operation Knight Rider, the department’s response to reckless driving. Pickett also managed security for the 2022 World Games in Birmingham.

“Deputy Chief Pickett is a dedicated public servant. I’m thankful he’s willing to step up and lead now. He’s known for his creative public safety approaches, and we’re excited about his leadership,” Woodfin said.

“I’m grateful to Mayor Woodfin for this chance,” Pickett said. “My goal is simple – a safer Birmingham. I’ll work to boost morale and energy in our department. We’ll recruit more officers and focus on smart, effective policing. My top priority is making residents feel secure and criminals uneasy in our city. I’m eager to start this work.”

Woodfin also revealed more leadership changes at the press event. Captain Edmond Hanks will become Interim Assistant Chief of Police starting November 29, 2024.
