SURVEY: 65% of Americans Saw Their First Horror Movie Before They Were 11 Years Old

If your fascination with horror films began during your childhood, it’s likely that this interest has only grown over the years.

A recent survey conducted with 2,000 U.S. adults who celebrate Halloween has revealed some intriguing insights. More than two-thirds (68%) of Americans surveyed reported that they enjoyed watching horror movies as children, and this enthusiasm remains strong today, with 73% still appreciating the genre.

In fact, nearly two-thirds (65%) of respondents indicated that they watched their very first horror movie before reaching the age of 11. Additionally, 60% of those surveyed believe that experiencing your first scary movie at a slumber party is a significant rite of passage that many cherish.

As these individuals have grown into adulthood, their preferences have evolved, yet certain types of horror films have emerged as favorites. Supernatural and paranormal movies are particularly popular, with 43% of adults favoring them. Psychological thrillers also hold a special place in the hearts of many, with 40% expressing a preference for this sub-genre, while slasher films attract 30% of horror enthusiasts.

A significant majority (84%) of those surveyed agree that scary movies are an essential part of the Halloween season. During this festive time, Americans typically watch an average of five different horror films. However, 23% of respondents go above and beyond, enjoying 10 or more scary movies during the spooky season.

Almost half (46%) of the participants indulge in horror films to help them get into the “spooky season mode,” while 43% partake in the tradition of watching scary movies simply for the thrill and excitement they bring.

Interestingly, despite the seasonal nature of Halloween, nearly one-third (29%) of respondents admitted that horror is their favorite genre, regardless of the time of year. This suggests that the allure of horror films transcends seasonal festivities, making it a beloved genre for many throughout the entire year.
